Keetwonen: student housing in Amsterdam
play Tempohousing video In 2006 Tempohousing, under the local brand name of Keetwonen, finished a 1000 unit student housing project. The project, located near the center of Amsterdam, consists of modified 40ft (30m2) shippingcontainers. Per block there is one building services container, supplying all units in the block of electricity and an Internet connection.
To accommodate good rainwater drainage a roof system has been placed over the top row of containers. The space under the roof also enables the exhausts of the mechanical ventilation to be placed easily and reduces the heat generated by the sun on the top of the top most containers. As a result there is no difference between the heat pressure in any of the units.
All of the units come with a balcony. Some of the containers at the ends of the blocks are fitted with windows in the side of the container to let more sunlight penetrate the unit.
For the vertical transportation a separate construction has been made, connecting the galleries along the north and south parts of the blocks via bridges. The general front door, situated next to the stairs, can be opened from within each unit by a videophone link.
The first block was ready at September 2005. The last block was finished in April 2006. Momentarely a 1000 students live in this campus and they are having a good time. Tempohousing also realised within this campus a café-restaurant, a supermarket, officebuildings - all out of shippingcontainers - and a sportingarea.
Please note that Tempohousing does not rent out the student homes at the Wenckehof. Renting is done by housing corporation De Key through their portal Studentenwoningweb. Any questions regarding renting a unit must be directed to De Key, for we don't have the information nor the authority to answer them.
