Tempohousing units are manufactured in different locations.

China facility

Tempohousing uses a modern production facility in China of about 8000 sqm where over 250 workers are employed. The production capacity for standard units can be as high as 60 units per week; the more complicated designs like the hotel rooms take more time.

All units produced in China use new steel shells manufactured in China. The special Tempohousing design includes reinforced frames front and rear (and on the side if needed). These shells have the size and the properties of shipping containers, but can not be used as freight containers.

Amsterdam facility

Tempohousing also develops projects based on used containers, either so called one way container (1 voyage made) or older ones that have been used for freight transportation for many years. The used containers are usually purchased as close to the location of the project as possible, this saves shipping cost from China to the project and second hand containers are cheaper. But: the steel frames need to be modified and they often need sandblasting and painting and the steel shell quality is not the same as the new ones. But used containers still make a great building if you use them right: a nice cladding system around the building and no one would know that the fancy new building is in fact made out of used shipping containers.

Using older shipping containers serves another important purpose: when doing the modification from container to living quarter locally, jobs are created. Tempohousing has licensed a factory in Amsterdam to use its designs to create a work and learn center for those who need support in finding a job or learning useful skills. These units are made to stock and are also sold (when available) by Tempohousing.

Sometimes government funds are available for these initiatives and depending on the circumstances, local production could be cheaper (though not necessarily easier) and the base shipping containers are available almost anywhere.
