Providing housing for 140 workers within 3 months.
In many West European countries, companies like to work with temporary staff from East European countries like Poland and the Czech republic since there is a shortage of labour in various industries. In Holland only, it is estimated that more than 60.000 workers from Poland are employed. Proper housing for these workers can be an obstacle in the hiring process: there are not enough hotel facilities or similar solutions available at affordable rates.
Tempohousing has recently finished a “Labour Hotel” to house 140 workers, mainly from Poland. For this hotel building we have used the model “Master” with 3 bedrooms that share a common shower, toilet, kitchen, dinner room and washing machine.
Quite special about this project is that Tempohousing chose for using second hand shipping containers from the Amsterdam port. These containers are converted into comfortable hotel rooms in Amsterdam near the final location of the hotel building. For a part of the project, Tempohousing used unemployed youngsters, who were given the opportunity to learn skills and to get working experience, under supervision of experienced trainers. With his approach, Tempohousing solved 3 problems in one project: good housing for foreign workers, offer employment for young drop outs and use sustainable resources in this construction project.
The finished hotel building doesn’t show the real containers this time: to achieve a high energy performance, the whole building, after stacking the containers is “wrapped” in a second skin: insulated cladding panels. The colour scheme red & blue was chosen by the customer.
The hotel is fully booked for the next 5 years. Making use of a temporary plot of land, it is the intention to relocate the building in 2013 to make way for permanent residential development, for which the land was originally meant. The design of the hotel anticipates such a relocation. However, it turns out that the hotel operation is already profitable after 5 years.
