Why the Salvation Army selected the Tempohousing modular system
The Dutch Salvation Army in Amsterdam has asked Tempohousing to design and build a temporary facility for their rehabilitation program.
Tempohousing has designed a hybrid solution, consisting of a traditionally built ground floor with concrete columns and the first and second floor consisting of 60 modular units type "Professor". The ground floor is designed as a large 1200 m2 open plan multi-purpose space, in which the Sal-vation Army created offices, a kitchen area and a social lounge.
The speed of construction has been one of the key advantages of this project, according to a spokesmen of the Salvation Army: "We have quite some buildings in the Amsterdam area, but it is amazing how quickly they could facilitate us with this new building".
The building is intended to stay only 5 years on this location. The Tempohousing system allows an easy relocation: all units can be dismantled quick and easy and transported to the new address.
The start of the construction was in April 2008 and the project is completed end of September 08. All prefabricated living units are manufactured in the factory in China. Once arrived by truck on the construction site, it took only 3 days to put them all on their final position in the building. "We have done this before and we have developed now a very smooth operation, allowing to stack about 20 units per day", says Mr. Walhout of the Dutch construction company "SMT Bouw", responsible on site for all construction works.
